RED Plug Success for Statoil

Following their extensive internal test program, which included onshore trials in a test well, Red Spider Technology today announce that the first offshore operation utilising the RED plug has now been successfully completed.
Norwegian operator Statoil used the RED plug as part of a plugging operation on Gullfaks Charlie well C-13, with the RED plug being suspended below a 7” model XO bridge plug supplied by PI Intervention. On completion of all pressure testing, the RED plug enabled the well to be safely equalised remotely from surface in 10 minutes, prior to running in to retrieve the Bridge Plug assembly. The plugs opening time and pressures involved were exactly as per the pre job operating instructions supplied by Red Spider to Statoil.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the entire operation was the time from initial decision to successful deployment and retrieval of the equipment was 8 days.
In this time, two RED plugs (front line and back up) were set up to suit the client’s well parameters and testing program. Both plugs were then tested as per the data supplied and firm operating details were established. In the meantime, Crossover Adapters were designed and manufactured to allow the plugs to be suspended below the bridge plug. The entire package containing plugs, crossovers and operational data, was then shipped to Norway for use offshore.

Red Spider Launches the RED Plug

Red Spider Technology launched a revolutionary remote opening plug, the RED Plug, in Aberdeen this month. The RED plug is an intervention set barrier that allows the operator to perform any number of pressure tests from surface up to the maximum rating, and then open it on demand. The device is extremely versatile because the number of pressure tests possible is unlimited and does not have to be pre-determined before the tool is run downhole.
Solution to Industry Problem
It is ideally suited to sub-sea and high angle, extended reach wells where access for retrieval using wireline or coiled tubing can be difficult, time consuming and costly. Another great advantage that the RED Plug has over traditional Wireline-opened plugs is its tolerance to debris. Standard plugs can be difficult to open if debris has accumulated above them as the opening mechanism cannot be accessed. The RED Plug opens so long as pressure can be applied through the debris from above.

High Lift Injection Valve Exceeds Expectations

Red Spider Technology’s High Lift Injection Valve was comprehensively tested at Qserv’s test facilities in Portlethen this month. In blizzard conditions that scared away the softer members of the team, Irvine Brown and Steve Nicol oversaw tests to check the valve’s resistance to debris and to measure pressure drop at different flow rates. The results of this were very impressive and we are confident that we have a product that outperforms all similarly priced tools on the market.
