Spider on Cards for Oil and Gas Firms
December 2003
Evening Express
North East oil and gas companies are being caught up in a Christmas web of intrigue.
Rather than sending out traditional Christmas cards this year, engineering company Red Spider Technology has posted dozens of tinsel spider tree decorations to prospective clients. The festive red spider decorations, which can be hung from Christmas trees, come in a box telling the tale of the Christmas spider legend.
Chris Oliver, general manager of Red Spider Technology, said, "According to German folklore, the tinsel we use to decorate our trees originates from spider webs. It has become a tradition to hang a spider on the Christmas tree and we hope that’s what people will do with their own Red Spiders."
The tinsel Red Spider mailing follows the delivery of hundreds of red spiders and red spider cakes last month, as part of the company's launch campaign. Red Spider Technology, based at Westhill Business Centre by Aberdeen, provides a pioneering new range of well intervention tools and completion engineering products for the oil and gas industry.

An innovative engineering product design company has been launched in Aberdeen, Rachel Cox reports. Red Spider Technology aims to pioneer a new range of well intervention tools and completion products for the oil and gas industry.
Chris Oliver, general manager of Red Spider, heads the team of four directors including Mike Reid, head of product development, Irvine Brown, head of engineering, and Andy Skinner, business development manager. Mr Oliver told Executive Life: "We've all been involved with larger companies, but for the last two years now, we have been looking to at going down the entrepreneurial route and setting up on our own". He explained, "We're serving the oil industry and we’re spoilt setting up in Aberdeen, because there are so many potential customers on our doorstep. But we've recognised there is a gap between the big companies catering for this market, and the smaller specialist ones. We're looking to fill this gap."
Red Spider Technology has a developed product range, but can design and manufacture tools to meet the specific needs of clients. Mr Oliver said: “Our strength lies in identifying technology gaps and solving problems. I’m sure that before long we’ll come up with the products that will make us famous!”. Mr Oliver says the team is in no doubt that Red Spider will quickly make its mark in the industry, and the company aims to have a turnover of over £2 million by year three of the operation.
Mr Oliver added, "The North Sea is a mature basin, with relatively high operating costs. Large and small operators alike are looking for fast, responsive companies, offering highly innovative technology products which will help them reduce their operating costs, maximise production and increase reservoir recovery. Overseas expansion is also on the cards, if the company fulfils its current objectives."

The four Red Spider directors have extensive experience in both the UK and overseas oil industry and have an impressive list of patented products to their names.
"The North Sea is a mature basin, with relatively high operating costs" says Chris Oliver, general manager of Red Spider. "Large and small operators alike are looking for fast, responsive companies offering highly innovative technology products which will help them reduce operating costs, maximise production and increase reservoir recovery. Red Spider will work closely with operators and service companies alike to bring about the required step change in technology."
Mike Reid heads up the Product Development division of Red Spider Technology. During his fifteen year career in designing oil tools, Mike has worked for Camco and WellDynamics, as well as starting the company Well Equip, which was acquired by Halliburton post merger with PES. Mike was a key player in the team which won the Harts Innovation Award at Houston OTC in 2003 for its SmartWell completion system.
Irvine Brown leaves Halliburton to become Red Spider’s head of engineering. He has been instrumental in the development of many key completion products, has a number of patents and SPE papers to his name, and is well respected within the industry.
Andy Skinner’s background in both operational and sales aspects of the industry equips him ideally for his new role as business development manager at Red Spider Technology.
Pat Reilly, director Bank of Scotland Business Banking, said “Bank of Scotland has a long-established reputation for supporting quality business in the north east of Scotland. Red Spider is looking to exploit a particular niche in this market, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
