Vettriano Evening Marks Milestone for Red Spider's Development
July 2005
Platform Magazine
More than 150 clients and potential customers attended the official opening of Red Spider Technology’s new premises on Friday 1 st July. The SMART Award-winner has increased its workshop area five-fold and doubled the size of its offices following a move to new premises on the Arnhall Business Park in Westhill, near Aberdeen. The move marks a milestone in the development of the business, which started life two years ago in the Westhill Business Centre nearby.
The new 1,800 sq ft offices bring together under one roof, Red Spider’s growing workforce, which is expected to increase to 25 by 2007 with a targeted turnover of £4 million. The 2,500 sq ft workshop will, says the company, increase its capacity for design and development of innovative down-hole tools for the oil and gas industry, including the conceptual flow control device for which it won the SMART:SCOTLAND Award.
Speaking of the move, Red Spider’s General Manager Chris Oliver, said: "This move consolidates our growth as a business since we set up in 2003 and allows room for expansion as we bring new people on board, with room for another 12 to 15 people.
We are an innovative company and have tried to capture the soul and spirit of Red Spider in the furnishings of the offices, while in the workshop we have sought to reflect the values and spirit of our brand – using colour and space."
The office is intended to encourage creativity and new thinking. Displayed on one of the walls is a painting of the Red Spider nebula (a white dwarf planet) by Canadian artist Paddy O’Sullivan, who’s ethos is a good match for Red Spider’s.
Reflecting Red Spider’s marketing creativity, which won it the Orange Small is Beautiful Award last year in the Best Marketing category, the opening event was named "Along came a spider…" after one of Scottish artist Jack Vettriano’s latest paintings and guests were treated to a display of original Vettriano prints along with cocktails such as the "Hydraulic Red" and "Red Spider Punch".
The evening was also highlighted by an illuminating presentation on certain Vettriano prints given by Mark Gask, owner of the Picture Framing Workshop in Inverurie who supplied all the prints.
Red Spider Technology was formed in 2003 to develop innovative tools to meet the challenges in the oil and gas industry. The company's flagship product, the Hydraulic Red is currently operating in the North Sea on a number of wells and has been adopted by the Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF) for field trials with their oil company members. The company’s Hydrostatic Support Valve has been developed for a major oil company to address fluid loss issues in its sub-hydrostatic wells. Other Red Spider designs include protection sleeves for a Norwegian client that will allow through-tubing rotary drilling of side-track wells from a floating vessel for the first time.
Red Spider was recognised as one of the UK’s top 10 new businesses in the final of last year's HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards and was one of three finalists for the Best New Business Award in the Grampian Awards for Business Enterprise 2004.
Double Prizes !
March 2005
The kilted spiders had another great awards night this month, when they picked up two commendations at the Scottish Offshore Achievements Awards; one for Most Promising Company, the other for Innovative Technology.
Mike Reid, Product Development Manager, said "The innovation technology award was particularly satisfying for me. We made the submission this year based on the success of the RED Plug, our unique remote opening device, and were joined at the awards dinner by new technology champions from our key clients who have supported the RED Plug into the field. It was great to share this success with those who have helped us make our idea a reality"
Chris Oliver, General Manager, and Mike Reid are shown collecting their awards from Sir Ian Wood, Chairman of Wood Group PLC.
